Recycled PET (rPET) Bottle Manufacturing Technology – A Global Trend

For many years, PET plastic has been the most common packaging material in the food, beverage, and cosmetics industries. Mechanical Recycling Technology

The most common method for producing rPET today is mechanical recycling. This process includes the following steps: collection → sorting → cleaning → shredding → melting → pelletizing rPET. The advantage of mechanical recycling lies in its simplicity, lower investment costs compared to chemical recycling, and broad applicability in many countries. However, the quality of rPET obtained often depends heavily on the input material. If PET bottles are contaminated with impurities, color, or chemical residues, the quality of the rPET pellets will decline, making them difficult to use in the food and cosmetics industries.

Therefore, mechanical recycling is often only suitable for non-food packaging products, or must be combined with advanced treatment technologies to ensure safety. Despite its limitations, mechanical recycling still plays a crucial role in handling the large volumes of PET bottles consumed annually, and serves as a foundation for many developing countries to join the global recycling chain.

Chemical Recycling Technology

Overcoming the drawbacks of mechanical recycling, chemical recycling is considered a more advanced and sustainable technology for the plastic packaging industry. Instead of simply cleaning and reprocessing the plastic pellets, this method breaks PET bottles down into their original monomers (ethylene glycol and terephthalic acid), which are then re-polymerized into virgin-quality PET.

As a result, rPET produced through chemical recycling has quality equivalent to, or even on par with, virgin PET, making it completely safe for use in the food, beverage, and cosmetics industries. Global corporations are investing heavily in this technology, viewing it as the key to achieving “Zero Waste Plastic.” However, chemical recycling remains costly, requiring advanced production lines and significant capital investment.

Therefore, in the short term, many businesses opt to combine both mechanical and chemical recycling methods, handling large waste volumes while also producing high-quality rPET for export. In the long run, chemical recycling is expected to become the global standard in rPET packaging production.

International Policies Driving rPET

One of the most important drivers for the development of rPET technology is policy from major markets. The European Union (EU) has mandated that by 2025, all plastic beverage bottles must contain at least 25% rPET, increasing to 30% by 2030. In the U.S., several states require a minimum percentage of recycled plastic in packaging and encourage Deposit Return Schemes (DRS) – where consumers are refunded when returning plastic bottles.

Japan and South Korea are also leading in building circular plastic systems, from collection to recycling and reuse. Such policies have created strong pressure on packaging companies and major brands in cosmetics and food to shift toward rPET. At the same time, this opens up great opportunities for packaging-producing countries like Vietnam, provided they invest early in rPET production lines and meet international standards.
